New Solutions Deliver Carrier Class, High Performance, Fully Redundant Capabilities

SAN JOSE, Calif. – RSA CONFERENCE – BOOTH 1601 – February 14, 2006 – 8e6 Technologies, a security company dedicated to Internet filtering and reporting, today announced the release of new high-availability carrier-class Web filtering and reporting solutions. Comprised of the R3000H and Enterprise Reporter (ERH), two simple-to-configure, compact 1U appliances, 8e6’s High-Availability offering is a robust, dedicated filtering and reporting solution that delivers unparalleled performance and scalability for a fraction of the cost of competitive offerings. Web content filtering is a critical component of a complete enterprise-wide network security strategy and therefore must be scalable, powerful and reliable. Many of today’s filtering solutions are software-based offerings that typically require installation on an existing cache, firewall or proxy server. These software-based systems have costly redundant High-Availability configurations with poor product support. Additionally, software systems, by design, lack the reliability provided by redundant appliances and can create network traffic jams due to shared server functionality. “As corporate liability and accountability concerns grow, it is essential that organizations implement solutions that ensure consistent network uptime and provide reliable reporting data,” says Brian Burke, research manager, Security Products, IDC. “With the introduction of its High-Availability option, 8e6 Technologies builds upon its proven market strength to offer innovative Internet filtering and reporting appliances.”

Unlike competitive software offerings that require shared server functionality and possibly several separate server installations, the 8e6 R3000H achieves enterprise-strength filtering with its purpose-built appliance approach combined with “pass-by” filtering technology. Designed to filter and filter only, the R3000H “watches” rather than “stops and checks” traffic as it goes by, eliminating the need to touch packets unless necessary.

“With 1,100 customers and an overall installed base of over 4.3 million users, 8e6’s average installation has nearly 4,000 users,” says Paul Myer, president and COO. “It is essential that organizations of this size ensure constant network availability. As demonstrated with the release of the High-Availability solution, 8e6’s product development team continues to incorporate customer feedback into the product roadmap to consistently deliver innovative solutions that meet the needs of today’s diverse businesses.”

Together, the R3000H and ERH provide a robust and scalable filtering solution supporting more than 50,000 users with a single appliance. Additionally, 8e6 Technologies controls and maintains the entire secured/hardened operating system, the Web filtering application, the reporting application and the hardware platform. This complete, holistic solution eliminates the support inconsistencies between the cache server and/or firewall vendor, the OS vendor, and the Web filtering application vendor.

The High-Availability offering includes:

  • Dual Xeon Processors – Both the ERH andR3000H are equipped with dual high performance Xeon processors that provide real-time filtering and monitoring of more than 30,000 users from a single 1U appliance.
  • Hot Swappable Hard Drives and Power Supplies – Both the ERH and R3000H are equipped with hot swappable hard disk drives and power supplies. This level of redundancy allows customers to swap out hard drives and power supplies on the fly without taking the Web filter out of service.
  • Robust and Stable OS Platform – The R3000H and ERH are based on a hardened version of Red Hat Linux for a stable, fast and resource-efficient throughput.
  • Time-based Filtering – This function provides control over access to Internet resources during specified times and saves on productivity and bandwidth during peak usage hours while providing flexibility to allow user access to selected/permitted sites during breaks, lunches or after hours.
  • User/Group Profiles – Administrators have the option to develop and select different user profiles and groups to determine access levels.
  • Remote Administration – This feature allows setup and administrative screens to be accessed and managed remotely via a standard Web browser, permitting management of the R3000H to be integrated into a network's existing control panels.
  • Multi-level Administration – This feature allows administrators to assign IP ranges to multiple sub administrators, who can then log in and manage their group remotely, providing the advantage of a centrally installed Internet filter.

Pricing and Availability

The 8e6 R3000H and ERH appliances list for $14,995 each and are available immediately.
