New streaming media, remote access application and online game categories address bandwidth and productivity concerns

ORANGE, Calif. – June 24, 2008 – 8e6 Technologies, the leading independent provider of Web filtering and insider threat management solutions for mid-size to large enterprises, today announced new blocking controls to address bandwidth and time consuming non-browser application use at work. Three new sets of application control filtering patterns provide the ability to categorize and block streaming media applications, remote access control applications and online games, three of the most popular non-browser application categories.

Applications in and outside the Web browser have become increasingly popular as developers capitalize on the power of the Internet as an application platform. Many of these applications exist outside the Web browser but still require a connection to the Internet. Streaming media and radio, popular multi-player games and applications like RealVNC, which allows a user to access their home PC at work, are all a tremendous burden to network bandwidth and employee productivity.

Security concerns are also increased with non-browser applications, as applications such as remote access tools open up new vulnerabilities via unfiltered Internet access to potentially malicious sites from the remote PC.

While there may be legitimate business cases for using these applications, the majority of businesses find it necessary to block or monitor use of non-browser applications. 8e6 Technologies recognizes the potential IT problems that stem from these popular applications. As a result, 8e6’s Web security research department, 8e6 Labs, has developed the following three sets of pattern detection capabilities for non-Web browser applications, giving organizations the control to either block or allow access and apply policy enforcement:

  • Streaming Media – Supports filtering of bandwidth-draining streaming media through Windows Media Player, QuickTime, Sopcast, TVAnts and all streaming protocols.
  • Remote Access Applications – Allows control over popular remote desktop applications, including GoToMyPC, pcAnywhere, Virtual Network Computing (VNC) and Remote Desktop.
  • Online/Network Games – Patterns address World of Warcraft, Second Life, Lineage, Legend and the Steam Network (Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress).

These patterns work in tandem with other blocking capabilities of 8e6’s R3000 Internet Filter such as blocking online games through simple URL filtering or blocking access to Web-based applications that rely on HTTP or HTTPS. The three new categories broaden the coverage of application control for the R3000 Internet Filter which has existing blocking capabilities of Instant Messaging, P2P and Web-based proxies.

“Like the issue of anonymous proxies before them, these non-traditional applications are introducing more problems for the workplace, and the plethora of new applications being developed each day only compounds the problem,” said George Shih, CEO of 8e6 Technologies. “At 8e6, we are committed to identifying and addressing the IT trends that complicate network security and policy enforcement before the problem becomes widespread, and have tasked our 8e6 Labs with staying one step ahead of emerging network threats.”
