Important Information Regarding the 1.7 Release
In last month’s newsletter, we mentioned that you needed to have an R3000 unit running software versions 1.6.30 or later in order to download the 1.7 release. This was a mistake: You need a software version of 1.6.20.15 or later. We apologize for any inconvenience.

NEW White Paper
The Software vs. Hardware Internet Filtering Debate
8e6 Security and IT managers selecting Internet filtering for their companies are well aware of the dilemma: Should they go with software or opt for a hardware appliance? Which of the two actually saves more time and money? The Forsite Group examines this question in “Web Filtering Appliances Heat Up the Hardware vs. Software Debate.” To learn more about hardware and software Web filters, download:
“Web Filtering Appliances Heat Up the Hardware vs. Software Debate”.

U-Haul International Moves Forward with 8e6’s Filtering and Reporting Solutions
Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, U-Haul International is the pioneer in
the do-it-yourself moving and storage industry, serving corporate and
consumer audiences through more than 14,000 independent dealers and 1,350
company-operated centers in the US and Canada. Like the rest of the
transportation industry, U-Haul needs a fast and reliable communications
infrastructure to quickly and efficiently serve clients on the move. Previous to installing 8e6 Technologies' solutions, the U-Haul Web Team was experiencing problems with employees overusing Instant Messaging (IM), streaming media, and spending time visiting unproductive sites. Not only was
the company's network infrastructure unprotected from viruses and spyware
when users inadvertently downloaded unauthorized files, but their activities
diminished bandwidth. To read the full-version, click: "U-Haul International Moves Forward with 8e6’s Filtering and Reporting Solutions".

Ask the Expert: Michael Bonnville, Sales Engineer
Q. How do I apply a white-list to a specific user / group?
A. With the R3000, version 1.7.x and later, create a custom category and add the sites you wish to white-list to this category. From the "profile" menu option ("subgroup profile" when dealing with IP groups), select the category which contains your white-list sites, and apply it to the "Always Allowed" column. Categories listed in the "Always Allowed" column will take precedence over those that are listed in the "Blocked Categories" column.
Do you have a technical question about 8e6 Technologies’ products? Ask the 8e6 Expert: Simply send an email to us and we’ll select one to answer in next month’s issue. Get answers from the most experienced team in the industry.

PROFILE
Name: Ray Yoro
Title: Beta Coordinator
Hobbies: Basketball, Food, and Texas Hold’em (Ray and the Quality Control guys hold weekly tournaments)
Raymond “Ray” Yoro will be celebrating his fifth year at 8e6 Technologies this October. Starting out in Technical Support, Ray was later promoted to his current position, Program Management Beta Coordinator. As a Beta Coordinator, Ray works on customer program requests and helps install new software and hardware patches on customer sites. Many customers sign up to be tested for these new patches because these features are not on the current release. There are usually 10-15 customers willing to test new features before they are implemented in a patch, which makes a general release all the better because it has been examined in the real-world. Each week, Ray works on approximately three major issues from customers. For example, one of the new features on our most recent patch, 1.7, comes directly from customer feedback. “The Admin Audit Trail was brought about by end-users who wanted a log that shows which administrator and at what time/date have made changes to the R3000 Internet Filter," Ray says."It's very exciting to see a feature based on an actual customer's request come into fruition."
Ray's tip for 8e6 Customers: If you have feature requests or enhancement ideas for our products, contact your Account Executive and they will bring this to our attention during weekly meetings. We prioritize future releases per requests, and when we have the patch ready for Beta testing, you can be the first to have this enhancement applied to your box. Or, if all else fails, REBOOT!
