Lauguna Beach Business Customer Premier Event
On October 12th-14th, 8e6 Technologies was proud to host a Premier Customer Event for Business/Enterprise at the prestigious Surf and Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California. Twenty guests met with the 8e6 Management team to discuss the future of 8e6 product development as well as to learn about current features on the R3000 and Enterprise Reporter. In addition, guests received a sneak peek at up-and-coming products. This intimate get-together enabled direct and effective discussions on the various network and security issues businesses are facing today, and current and planned solutions 8e6 can provide to mitigate these issues. 8e6 would like to thank all participants--we were all blessed with wonderful weather, good food, and great company and look forward to hosting more of these events in the future.

Ask the Expert: Tarun Mann, Solutions Engineer
Q: How can I block the ability to download files via file extension type?
A: The idea here is creating a custom category with a list of specific attachment types (keywords), enabling the URL Keyword filtering module, and then selecting that custom category to be blocked for your profiles. Here's an example:
Add a Custom Category and call it "File Extensions". For that "File Extensions" category, click on the option for URL Keywords. Now all we need to do is add the file extensions you would like to block. When you add the file extensions, make sure you add them with the period; so for an example I would type the word .mp3 in the Keyword field and then click on "Add". Keep adding until you have all the appropriate file extensions and then click on "Reload" to reload the library. Now all you have to do is apply it to the proper Group or to your Global Group Profile. In either case, navigate to the appropriate profile in the GUI and select the Filter Options tab. >From here enable "URL Keyword Filter Control" and click apply to save your settings. Make sure to also set the "File Extensions" category into the Blocked Category column for the specified profile.
From this point on, if the filter sees any of those keywords explicitly listed in the "File Extensions" category in the URL, it will block the user when they make that request to download the file (assuming they belong to the group with that profile enabled).

Employee Spotlight November 2005

PROFILE:
Name: Allison Arvizu
Title: Inside Sales Region Representative
Hobbies: Surfing, snowboarding
Since January 2005, Allison Arvizu has made big waves at 8e6 as an Inside Sales Region Representative. Along with four teammates, Allison covers all business and approximately two tradeshows a month in the US Western region. However, Allison also devotes much of her time to her second job and first love—surfing. As a top 10 world surfing champion with sponsors such as Toyota and Huntington Surf & Sport, Allison competes in at least 12 contests a year and 6 of them take place out of the country. “I first started surfing when I was 4 years old but became a professional when I was 18,” she tells us. “It’s a massive secret in the surfing industry that I have a ‘real job’,” she jokes. But Allison doesn’t just take to the waves; she is also a professional snow-boarder. Every weekend she’s either in the Oregon, Utah, or California mountains, but you may also find her tearing the ice in Norway or Switzerland. “My typical day is to surf from 4-6 in the morning, work at 8e6 from 7-3, and snowboard until 11 at night.” And you think you’re tired!
Allison’s Tip to Customers:
"If you’re going to sacrifice your entire day to working, sacrifice it to something you love. 8e6 supports me in all my endeavors in and out of the office".

8e6 Announces Survey Winner for iPod Shuffle
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our clients with the best of Internet Content Filtering, Monitoring and Reporting Appliances on the market, 8e6 recently conducted a survey of network security and IT professionals from a broad scope of industries to find out how we can improve our customer service and better provide for our customers’ needs.
As an incentive to complete the survey, we held a drawing of all participants for an iPod Nano. And the winner is… Gabriel Trujillo, Supervisor for the Network Administration department at Kiewit Corporation. Gabriel was thrilled to win one of the most popular music players available, stating “I am very excited to have won the iPod – I have wanted one for a long time. 8e6 is the coolest!” Congratulations to Gabriel from everyone at the 8e6 team.
