Enterprise Reporter Assists San Diego High School in Preventing Potentially Fatal School Shooting
In late May 2005, a teacher at Mission Bay High School in San Diego, CA received an anonymous death threat via his school email account. Due to the life-threatening nature of the email, and the fact that the student had imposed an actual date that the violence would occur, all effort was made to apprehend the student immediately. Thanks to the 8e6 Enterprise Reporter, the District’s Security Administrator, Grant Gutstadt, was able to solve the case within 24 hours and the San Diego Police promptly arrested the student. 10 Year Anniversary
8e6 Technologies kicked off a summer-long tribute to their 10-year anniversary on June 24 with a company-wide celebration at their headquarters in Orange, CA. Festivities included a barbeque, games and heart-warming commentary from CEO George Shih, President Paul Myer, and numerous employees who had been with the company since the beginning.
Filtering networks since 1995, 8e6 has held its own against the constantly changing economy as well as the ever-expanding challenges posed by the fierce growth of the Internet. Surpassing this important milestone in such a highly competitive arena can be accredited to the company’s continuous ability to provide best-of-breed solutions through appliance-based Internet filtering and reporting. In the past decade 8e6 has seen some significant year-to-year increase in sales. In 2004 alone the company ended the year with 30% growth in sales over 2003. As a company, 8e6 has expanded from just a handful of local employees in 1995 to more than 100 employees today throughout the United States and abroad.

Employee Spotlight July 2005

PROFILE:
Name: Mark Parker
Title: Senior Program Manager
Hobbies: Rock stomping with his wife and two children, kayaking on the Pacific Ocean.
Mark Parker knows all the ins and outs of program engineering at 8e6 Technologies. Shortly after starting out in Technical Support in 1999, Mark was promoted to Manager of Solutions Engineers. Four years later, 8e6's executive team recognized Mark’s hard work and valuable knowledge, and made him Senior Program Manager. As such, Mark is the all around go-to guy for engineering problems. For two years, Mark has been handling the beta program, working directly with the Quality Control, Research and Development, and Programming departments. In addition, he also handles escalations from 8e6’s Support and Solutions Engineers. Not only is he the communication intermediary between departments for issues and decisions on new features, Mark also presents customer dilemmas and needs to the development team. What he's most often heard saying to staff: If it doesn't fit, you are using the wrong tool. Get a bigger hammer. Just kidding.
Mark's tip for 8e6 customers: An effective range to detect setting is the most important configuration on the R3000 because it determines which traffic the R3000 will handle. By ensuring that the R3000 is detecting only traffic that is destined from the users to the Internet, you will get the highest performance from your R3000.

8e6 Web Client
8e6 Enterprise Reporter (ER) customers can now utilize the new Enterprise Reporter Web Client for all reporting needs. Previously, an MS Access Client had to be installed on an Administrator's workstation. The new Web Client was released on June 30 and is available by downloading the latest Enterprise Reporter Server patch here.
The patch can be installed on an ER Server upgraded with the following software versions:
OS upgrade (3.50.0) and MySQL upgrade (3.50.1). No additional software is needed on Administrator workstations and up to eight simultaneous users can use the Web Client, for a maximum of 16 open sessions.
Discontinued 8e6 Products:
8e6 continues to focus Sales and Development resources on our extensive line of appliance-based filter and reporting products, including the R3000 filter and Enterprise Reporter. In light of this focus, and after careful review of our overall product line, 8e6 has decided to officially discontinue a number of older products, including the Satellite XP and 8e6 for Microsoft ISA and NT Proxy, among others. 8e6 is committed to honoring existing customer contracts for these products and is working to help customers migrate to our current and more feature-rich products. More information and important service and support dates can be found in the individual "Product End-of-Life (EOL) Notices" posted on the 8e6 Website here.
