Letter from the President, Paul Myer
Happy New Year!
As we enter 2006, I would like to thank you for your confidence in our products and wish you a healthy and prosperous new year. The new year brings a time for reflection on past accomplishments and a look ahead to future opportunities.
2005 was a landmark year for 8e6 Technologies— we celebrated our 10-year anniversary in June and we have hired over 40 new employees! 8e6 also introduced two new R3000 solutions: the R3000G and R3000S, which are designed to support up to 30,000 users with a single appliance. 8e6 paid detailed attention to our customers’ wish list and added the R3000IR, which combines all of the features and benefits of the R3000 filtering with integrated reporting capabilities from the Enterprise Reporter, to our line of Internet filtering and reporting solutions. In addition, our R3000MSA was awarded T&L’s Learning Legacy Award as the best-of-breed leader in the Internet filtering market. But it doesn’t take an award to prove our products’ achievements—satisfied 8e6 customers have helped us add ten new Success Stories to our Web site!
Last year, 8e6 promised to increase our focus on spyware, spam and laws such as HIPAA and CIPA. We’ve done just that with our white papers on CIPA, HIPAA, organizational Web policies, spyware, and hardware vs. software filters. Our Webinars have successfully covered topics such as how to neutralize the spyware threat and CIPA updates. These white papers and past Webinars are always available on our Web site.
2005 also marked 8e6’s formal entry into the rapidly growing and dynamic China market with the opening of an office in Beijing to complement its existing office in Taipei. The two offices became our Greater China Division (GCD), adding 20 new employees to our workforce.
As 2006 begins, 8e6 is committed to providing you with the best of breed products that you have come to expect. You have helped us in our growth and success, and we are dedicated to ensuring your organization’s security with our products. 8e6 has more white papers and customer events planned for 2006, and will be releasing several exciting new appliances to make your job easier. Our success has been based on your feedback at our customer events and in your interaction with our sales and marketing teams. You’ve told us what you need, and we’ve listened and implemented many of your suggestions.
Thank you for your incredible support. 8e6 promises to continue to support you in your endeavors to protect the security of your organization.

Feature Spotlight: "X-Strikes” Blocking
The “X-Strikes” Blocking feature lets a Global Administrator set criteria for blocking a user's access to “unacceptable” Internet sites and locking a user’s workstation after the user makes a specified number of attempts to access such sites. This feature is accessible via System > X Strikes Blocking.

Ask the Expert: Matt Schuler, Sales Engineer
Q: I am blocking the Instant Messaging and Peer-to-Peer/File Sharing
categories. I don't seem to be able to access Web sites categorized
as IM or P2P but I can still use IM or P2P applications. How do I configure
the R3000 to prevent the applications from working as well?
A: Ensure 'Service Blocking' for Instant Messaging and P2P is enabled.
Navigate the R3000 GUI to access the Filter Control page: (SYSTEM ->
Control -> Filter).
Under Service Blocking, select the radio buttons for Instant Messaging and
P2P and then click on “APPLY”.

Employee Spotlight January 2006: Get to Know Our Employees
PROFILE:
Name: Ross Miedecke
Title: Senior Solutions Engineer
Hobbies: Next to devoting much of his energy on his baby girl, Kyra, Ross is an avid golfer (he currently has pink golf balls on his desk, next to several pictures of his daughter). He was also involved in a competitive Christmas light contest in his Chino Hills neighborhood.
Ross Miedecke is one of 8e6’s longest reigning engineers, which makes him a connoisseur of fine 8e6 filtering solutions. Ross first began his 8e6 career in 1999 as a Technical Support Representative and quickly became a Technical Support Supervisor where he helped clients with basic product troubleshooting, solutions to common issues, how-tos, and the latest downloads. In 2002, Ross’ positive attitude and superior understanding of 8e6’s products made him a perfect choice for Solutions Engineering Manager, where his duties include installation architecture, and designing and finding where a product is implemented on an existing network.
Ross supports 5-10 customers a week on the West Coast and Internationally, sometimes at all times of the day and night. Combined with Kyra, his baby daughter, he doesn’t get much sleep! But no matter when you call him, Ross is always happy to speak with a client. “I love what I do because I enjoy speaking with customers. I never work on the same network solution or installation because each customer has different needs, which makes my job all the more exciting and challenging. I guess you could say I enjoy solving puzzles”.
Ross’ Tip to 8e6 clients: "When you receive your new R3000 appliance, the database is empty so remember to download the latest library before testing the product."

January’s Success Story
Profile: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital
Challenge: St. Jude is a research hospital where scientists can spend large amounts of time on the Internet. The hospital needed flexibility to customize the filtering in ways necessary for compliance of the hospital's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Manager of Information Security, Monroe Wesley, says, "The intent for monitoring and blocking at St. Jude is not to hinder any of the organization's purpose, but to help provide the proper work environment."
Solutions: R3000 Internet Filter and Enterprise Reporter 3.0
Results: Wesley finds one of the best things about the R3000 is the flexibility to compensate for certain words and their alternate meanings. "The R3000 provides the opportunity for customizing the rule sets to help promote the location of necessary information, while not completely opening access to the Web and its risks."
