R3000 Internet Filtering Appliance

Holiday Shopping Made Easier and More Secure

December is the biggest shopping month of the year, and people are not just flocking to the malls. With fast Internet speed at work, employees are using more than their lunch hour shopping online. According to a recent survey, online shopping has jumped 30% since last year with more than 78% of U.S. Internet users planning on shopping online this year, and among those, 51.7% browse the Internet for gifts at work (BIGresearch LLC). While there are benefits to allowing employees to shop online at work (convenience, especially if the employee works later and longer hours), there is also a risk for Internet abuse.

Allotting a specific time period for employee shopping is the answer for companies who do not want to block all shopping sites. The R3000’s time-based filtering feature allows Network Administrators or managers to customize/modify a user’s profile so that employee is allowed to go to shopping sites during the time the company allows. This limits spyware and phishing risks, making your company more secure during the holidays. For more information about the R3000, click here>>

Feature Spotlight: Google Web Accelerator Pattern Based Blocking
Google’s new Web Accelerator has not been released yet, but 8e6’s 1.7.10 product release includes a feature that will allow customers to disable it. The Accelerator, still in Beta-stage, uses various strategies to make Web pages load faster, and enables users to encrypt data and route it through Google cache servers in order to bypass installed filtering systems. 8e6’s proxy pattern detection technology blocks end-users at the packet level from using Google Web Accelerator.

R3000 1.8 Release Announcement
Keep an eye out for the R3000 1.8 release announcement later this month in your inbox. This new release features improved IP exclusion methods and also allows you to edit the R3000 filter string. You must already have an R3000 unit running software versions 1.7.10 or later in order to take advantage of the new release. Patches can be downloaded through the GUI.

Ask the Expert: Michael Bonnville, Sales Engineer
Recommendation: Make sure you configure the range-to-detect setting (group -> global group -> range-to-detect) to only include network ranges you want to filter. This way the R3000 spends processing power filtering only the traffic you want and not overspending power.
For example: Only monitor traffic sourced from your network but not destined to the local network.

Employee Spotlight December 2005

Allison Arvisu in action
PROFILE:

Name:  Greg Smith
Title:     Director, Engineering and Operations

Since 2000, Greg Smith has been a driving force at making 8e6 products the success they are today. As the Director of Engineering and Operations, Greg oversees the corporate IT infrastructure, which includes the Programming and Quality Control units. In addition, Greg initiates product development and manages outside production, ensuring that 8e6 delivers quality appliances to customers by our monthly deadlines. Greg’s expert product management has enabled 8e6 to stay ahead of the trend in Internet filtering and reporting, with four major releases per product a year and an undefined number of minor product releases. But Greg isn’t just a superstar at 8e6; he is also a National competitor in shifter kart racing. Greg currently holds the #1 ShifterKartsUSA plate in the Stock Honda class and last month earned a third place at karting's SuperNationals IX in Las Vegas. These 200 lb. go-karts with 6 speed transmission have the ability to go from 0-60 in under 4 seconds and top out at 120 miles/hour. Racing since he was 20, Greg vividly recalls competing against actor Steve McQueen in one of the first US moto cross events in the 1960's. “Today,” Greg admits, “I’m older than most of the parents of the 16-20 year olds who compete.” He laughs. “It’s pretty funny seeing their faces when I pull off my helmet.”

Greg’s Tip to 8e6 clients:
“We really value our customers’ input. The more we hear from you about what you like or don’t like about our products, the better we are able to construct them according to your needs. When the customer speaks, 8e6 listens.”

December’s Success Story

Profile: U-Haul International

Challenge: Employees overusing IM, streaming media, and visiting unproductive Web
sites. “When we first started looking for a device, we required that it be a hardened appliance, and it had to do pass-by packet inspection—not pass through. We didn’t want any of our users to not be able to get to the Internet to do their job because of a system going down,” says Mike Saur, Network Engineer.

Solutions: R3000 Internet Filter, Enterprise Reporter 3.0

Results: “In its most basic configuration, the R3000 does everything that we need and more. Coupled with the Enterprise Reporter 3.0, we now have a total enterprise solution that blocks, filters, and reports on all of our internet usage with minimal effort,” says Saur. Mike Matlock, Network Engineer, agrees. “Most Internet filtering products available were way too complex and intrusive. We unpacked the R3000 and Enterprise Reporter and had
them running within 30 minutes—Set it and forget it.”
